Raise Your Sharpening IQ

Red Flags when a Sharpener Enters your Shop!

Attention all Salon and Barber Shops! This is the time of year after the busy holiday season you are more likely to welcome a sharpener into your shop. Well, just like you have to make sure your salon is a safe place for your customers; it should also be a safe zone for your scissors and blades! What I mean by that is watch out for what to look for in this so call professional that you’ve entrusted your favorite scissors to! Are they really an expert in the field with good training? Here are some tips that you can visually look for when they enter  and start to sharpen your tools.

RED FLAGS:

  • NO Table set up just a flat honing machine with no visible signs of using Whet Stones.
  •  They hold your scissors on the Wheel “Free hand” and do NOT take the scissor apart to put into a clamp mechanism so that the “degree” in which they will sharpen your edge will be correct for that Scissor!!
  •  It takes them a mere 5 mins to sharpen your scissor. If done correctly, it would take 15 to 20 min.
  •  Your scissors are not cutting like butter. Check your edge with a magnify glass. Was it a Convex edge but now it’s flat like a bevel edge? Oops! Are there burrs left on your blades? Oops! Is the ride line on your convex scissor nonexistent? Oops!

These are just a few tips I can give you to watch out for. Do not be intimidated by the fact that they are doing a service you are not well educated in. Just like when you take your car to the mechanic and you are able to engage in asking intelligent questions to make sure you are getting the best service this is no different. I am here to answer as many of your questions as I can and never feel like a question is a dumb question! There is no such thing as a dumb question only the one you didn’t ask! The Bee Sharp Lady is here to help you out and make sure you are ready for  this year 2024! Happy New Year Everyone!
